Distribution: East and West Africa
Description:
Heartwood ranges from mediun to dark reddish-brown color with prominent ribbon stripes in quarter sawn pieces.  Grain is fine and very interlocked. Sapele has a cedar-like scent when freshly milled
Working Properties:
Works well with only a moderate blunting effect on tooling.  A reduced cutting angle will reduce tearing the interlocked grain on quartered pieces.
Uses:
High-end furniture, boat building, interior molding, cabinetmaking, caskets, outdoor garden furniture, general construction, veneered plywood.
Durability:
Moderately durable. Heartwood is resistant to preservative treatment
